My Impressions of this class (Phoebe Chang)

This is the first time to write a jounral about my impressions of a class. Honestly, I didn't work hard in the class before, and I always go to school late. Eilidh tought us many concept of writing, and join sentences together. I think it's prctical. We also studied how to writing a paragraph and general writing. It's boring but it's useful. I'll try my best in the last few month.

Internet in China

In recently, the Internet in China was a hot topic talked by a lot of people. With the arrival of knowledge economy age, Internet, as a new media, has come into our life. Nowadays, getting on the line and using Internet has become popular in China, especially in some big cities. Why is Internet getting so popular in such a short time?

The popularity of Internet results forms its great utility. With Internet, it is convenient and fast for people to get a variety of information and what they need is just to press the key buttons. Email is another popular use. It can transmit your letter quickly, safely and accurately. Besides, Internet can have some other uses. Doctors may use it to diagnose and treat their patients by discussing or exchanging experiences with doctors in other parts of the world. Finally, businessmen can conduct e-commerce or E-business on the net.

With so many uses and advantages, there is no doubt that more and more people will be wired to Internet-the information expressway. In short, with its high speed and efficiency, Internet will be more popular in China in the future.

Studying and living in Vancouver (Wenan)

I consider that studying and living in Vancouver is a very useful experience in my life.

It was a mystifying experience from Beijing to Vancouver by airplane, as low hanging clouds prevented me from seeing the true colors of this city. As I made my way out of the airport, a multicultural crowd enveloped me. The city is truly worldly even in its composition. I find Canadians are very friendly. They can get along well with other countries’ people.

The second thing I learned from Canadians is that I find Canadians are full of passion. During the Olympic Games, Canadians were very happy and they held pageants in downtown Vancouver everyday. They held up Canada’s national flag and song Canada’s national anthem. They felt very happy and yelled to the passersby “Go Canada Go! Give me a five! ”

The third thing I learned from Canadians is they respect and contain other countries’ culture and try to find the good of other cultures to improve themselves. It is different with Koreans. Koreans always think good culture and the best things are all from Korea. Koreans said that all of the Asian culture came from Korea. It is very stupid!

Overall, studying in Canada is a good experience for me. I learn English from Canadians and learn their culture. It is very useful for me to live in Canada.

I like Vancouver. I like Canada. I like Canadians.

The Effects of Moving to another Country (Samar)

New life, new people and new challenges are important things. A person who wants to move to another country, who thinks in all of these things. On other hand, you should take the effects of moving to another country into consideration. There are many effects of moving permanently to another country. First of all, change your custom because it is easy way to talk with new people. For example, I come from different culture, so in my home town I cover my face. Nobody can see my face, but now I change that to cover my hair because I am in Canada and Canadian people don’t look at me as strange person. Another effects to move to another country, it change your life style. For instance, I used to wake up at 1 PM, but now I wake up at 8.30 AM. Moreover, my mother didn’t allow me to eat fast food, but now I have eaten fast food many times, so my weight has increased than before. As I believe that the person can take something new and useful wherever he\she found the benefit, but leave anything will change your culture.

Sunny to cloudy（Bonnie）

There are many funny things happened to me when I studied in my university. So my life of university is an impressive experience. I remembered clearly one thing is that I have ever been to the male’s washroom twice a day, and it became a classical joke that my roommates often told nowadays.
That was a sunny day and we just finished our final exam. On our way back to dorm, I wanted to go to the bathroom, so I entered a building alone. I was so happy that not only forgot to look at the symbol of the washroom, but also forgot that my university is a military school, and that building was only for the male soldiers’ studying. When I was about to close to the washroom, I saw one guy coming out from the left hand door, then I pushed the right hand door without any denying. The washroom was quiet that I have not even realized I was in a totally wrong place until another guy pushed the door heavily and stopped at the door. He was staring me with the surprising and curious eyes, then he said to me calmly,” this is the male’s washroom.”
“What?” I shouted. I could see that the laugh was leaking from the guy’s eyes even if he was trying to keep calm. I was so ashamed that I wanted to dig into a hole. I rushed out of the washroom and ran into the opposite door. Again, I blushed when I raised my head because I saw three guys standing in front of me with the frightened appearance. I was confused and stood there liked a sculpture. After a while, I heard someone saying,” There are no washrooms for ladies in this building.” That’s the point! I understood finally. As I went back to my dorm without any happy emotions, the weather tended to be cloudy. What a magical day!
It was an interesting and unforgettable experience for me, and since then, my roommates always talked about it as a joke.

What Inspire Me to Live For (Thanisa)

What inspire me to live for? This question is easy, but it is hard to answer. Some people have lived for love, for study, for playing games or to see a favorite series every Friday night. In my opinion, there are three things that inspire me to live for
The first thing is living for my family. The word “family” is an important word for me. My family has five people; my father, my mother, my two younger sisters and me. Although, My mother and my younger sister live in Thailand, my father and my youngest sister live in New Zealand, and I live in Canada, we are one. When one of us has a problem, other members help him or her to solve this problem. For example, I have lived in Canada for one month. I felt homesick and called my father and my mother. After that, my mother flew by plane from Thailand to Canada and lived with me for one week. I feel very lucky to born into my family
The second thing is living for success. I believe that everybody has a dream and wants to follow their dream. In my dream, I want to get a fabulous job. First, I want score 7.00 in my IELTS test. Then, I will study a master degree in Human Resource Management. After that, I will work in an international company. I know that my dream is very hard, but I think this is a challengeable goal, and I will succeed in the future
The third thing is helping other people. In our world there are many people who have problem such as crimes, drugs, or not enough food. I am a part of this world, so I should help other people to have a good quality of life. That is the reason why I choose to study Human Resource Management because I want to help co-workers in the same company to have a suitable compensation, incredible training and awesome regulations. Now, I am joining volunteer club in the English Language Institute. Even though, I am only one person and don’t have enough power to do big things, I can do small things to help other people such as cook delicious food for poor people or give toys to children.
These three things are significant things in my life. It can help me to have inspiration for a wonderful quality life. What about you? What inspire me to live for?

Different Communicates Between Male and Female（Wenan Wu）

There are many different communicates between male and female. Event thought they grow up in the some culture. We can find the difference since they are in the first, when they grow up, we can see more and more dissimilar.
First, when they are in the school, boys and girls usually play in the some-sex groups. The boys like playing in the big groups. They like to compare to each other and get more attention from them classmates. While they are playing games, they try to their best to win. They like to show how better they can do. Otherwise, the girls prefer to play in small groups, maybe just one or two best friends. They do not like to be bossy, they do many things for let their classmates like them. When they play games, they just play them for fun.
Second, different sexes use language in different ways. Male often use commands when they talk to each other. During them playing games, they like to say “You go first, don’t wait for me, I will catch you soon.” It sounds like they are leaders. When they needs help, ladies would like to say “could you open the window” or “may I ……” but males they just want people do what they say. Such as “open the door.” For me, I will feel more comfortable when lady ask me for help.
Finally, in my country most men need to work more hard women. They have liability to protect and make enough money for their families. When people have problems, men like to think how to solve them by themselves. Women usually have no ideas and they would like to ask people for help. I think men’s ability of service are more strong.
These differences seem like male and female can not live together well. Actually not, they need each other. Just like women like to listen to men and men like to order women. Why does it strange?

Five weeks in 420W class(Jordan)

Until now, I had studied in 420W class about five weeks. I studied how to brainstorm, write a outline and find main idea and some other skills for writing a essay, however, I still confuse to write a outline. I always feel sleepy in my class, may be it because of I go to bed late everyday. I am not good at manage my time. Every day I try to control myself, but my mind can not follow me, and I can not pay attention to learn in class. I hope I can kill this bad habit, because I think it is not good for me and my classmates, it also not polite for my teacher. This journal likes a self evaluation. I hope you can give me some idea about my problem, thanks.

Who Knows Your Marks? (Vanessa Bo)

A rule in my high school I really dislike most is students’ marks are ranked and posted for the whole school to know. In traditional education in China, the administrations are convinced that the students achieve a low score can be drove to learn from the ones of high score. This phenomenon has become a controversial issue in Chinese society.
It is undeniable that publicly announcement of test results has several benefits in some aspects. On one hand, students are easy to find out whether they have improvement or not. At the same time, they come to understand their weakness, and get good results in next exams. On the other hand, suffering some frustration, young people tend to be more inner-strength and more competitive.
However, the disadvantages of opening results are much more significant than the advantages. First, it only encourages few successes do excellent jobs in tests, but hurts other students have unsuccessful experiences. In addition, the high-mark students are always worried about being caught up with by their classmates. The result is everyone in class is under enormous pressure everyday. Second, on the surface, the students accept their marks to be posted publicly, but it is a severe hurt to their pride. Adolescents may be passive and lack of self-confidence when they grow up. At last, it leads to a troubled relationship between children and their parents or teachers. Most high school students regard their teachers as adversaries because their teachers announce the scores and rankings which makes them embarrassed and humiliated.
In my opinion, the value of students cannot be weighted by examination marks, because every student has different interests and talent. Parents and teachers should be their guides, counselors and friends to help them acquire knowledge of life but also academic.

Is It a Interesting or Frightening Thing? (Will)

When I saw this composition title，a lot of memories flowed. But just one thing let me feel it just like happened on yesterday. That is when I was little，I was a naughty boy. I had used to climb the tree or grasp firefly in my hometown. I’m good at having fun. So actually I had a happy childhood, but sometimes we not aware of the danger.One day, my friends bought a new refrigerator. The outer package for the refrigerator has so many polyfoam. Then I suddenly had an idea, I thought the “polyfoam boat” maybe had enough buoyancy to support us. So I wanted to make a boat by polyfoam, because the stream is near where I lived, I can took a trip with my friends by boat. After what I think, I decided to make my boat. When we finished it, I just leave a letter for my parents, I say“Don't worry about me, the stream will make my dreams come true”. I was so naive, isn't it? My best friend decided to come with me, so we went to stream together. Before We tested the boat for its buoyancy. “Will！Will ~!!”just then a familiar voice came from very far away. Who is calling my name? I turned around I saw my mother was crying and running to us. “Why she was crying?” I got another question! I thought maybe she read my letter and proud of me. Before I wanted to talk to her, “Do you know how dangerous you did that!? How can you have this crazy idea “My mom said? My mom took us to homes so we needed to stop our plan, the journey ends in this way.
After I arrived home, I have no idea why my mom did this. While I’m growing, now I finally know what dangerous thing I did. Did you also have anything happened like me in your childhood?

The Amazing Way to Express Your Thought (Samar)

Sometimes you need to talk to someone, who can listen to you, but everyone is busy with their lives. I believe that it is better to talk with your pen than to talk with people because people have limit to listen to you. However, writing is the best way to improve your knowledge, run your brain and express your feeling.
Everyone wants to be a good writer. However, if you read a lot, you will improve your writing and your knowledge. When you start thinking and using your back ground knowledge, you encouraging your brain. Even thought, you are writing by your first language or English.
Writing makes space for people to express their feeling and give them free dame to explain their opinion. On other hand, some people enjoy to write about their daily lives. I think writing is important for everyone to communicate such as people who can’t spoke. I enjoy writing my daily life to remind me every moment in my life. Now I have to learn writing by English language to achieve my goal. Writing is amazing way to talk about every thing without voice.

about movie (Phoebe Chang)

When a new movie coming, of course the movie that I am interested in, I always think about: do I need to get a DVD or go to a theatre? Actually most of people thought about this question before. And also depend on who you are going with, and what kind of movie do you choose.
I always like to watch documentary film or comedy at home with my friends. because I think it have more fun. I can eat whatever I want and I can stop the movie when I go to washroom. It makes me feel relaxing. If I go to a theatre, It must be a action or science fiction movie, because I want to feel an ambience of movie.

Theatre or DVD (Kenny)

There were many people talking about watching a movie in the theatre or watching a DVD at home? For me, I'd like went to theatre for watching a movie, especially action movies. Because I thought watching a movie in the theatre the visual effect were better than wathcing a DVD at home. At home your audio were smaller, and the screen was smaller too. Imagine, when you look at war movies, in the theatre you will feel like in that environment actually, however, if you watching DVD at home you will not feel like this. Someone said that watching a movie in the theatre was very expensive, therefore, I have done some research in the Bestbuy. The new DVD's price were between 10 to 20 dollar, the used DVD's price were cheaper just 5 dollar, but that all the old movies. So as the result, the price between watching a movie in the theatre and watching a DVD at home were same. However, there two reasons I thought watching a DVD at home was better than in the theatre, first,if you really like the movie you can watching it again and again. Second, when the movie was released in the theatre but you didn't had time to went to cinema, and when you had time the movie was finished you could bought DVD. There are some my own opinions do you agree with me ?

Similar or not（Bonnie)

Two of my friends, Xin and Yan, have the similar personalities while have big differences. We feel interesting about their similarities, but also feel surprising about their definite diversities.
They are both outgoing and short-tempered. Even though they are best friends, they have the most contradictions comparing with getting along with us. Doing the exciting things are their hobbies because they are active and can not stop playing anytime. They do not want to be controlled and do the things that attract them by following their hearts. Moreover, Xin dose not only have the short temper, but is also modest. She sustains her own opinion meanwhile she accepts other people’s suggestion. However, Yan is more willful because she only depends on her own viewpoints without anybody’s advice.
My two friends are the smart ladies and the great debaters. They are good at arguing when they try to obtain their rights. Of course, there is a difference between their arguments. Yan is a clever business man; she operates a shop selling cell phones that can make her be stronger because of her quick reaction. She persuades the people by using the intense arguments to buy her products. But Xin always argues with the person who is the leader of her company. She often feels unfair when her leader does something. That is the reason why she has quitted from five companies. In my opinion, they are so self-confident that they are not afraid of all the difficulties. They will defeat what they do not agree with.
Xin is sensitive, but Yan is more realistic. On one hand, they both love making friends, while Yan will consider that which type of friends she should get along with. However, Xin doesn’t care about these things, she just dose what she loves to do whatever how awful the situation is. On the other hand, Yan prefers to spend more time on staying with her families. On contrast, Xin would like to travel everywhere if she has time. She has travelled to Tibet lonely, but Yan does not have the brief. So Xin is more independent than Yan.
To conclude, they are both deeply impressive people because of their bright characters. But none of person could be same, they are individual.

Watching TV or Listening to the Radio (Thanisa)

In the 20-th century creator invented many different kinds of technologies. Television and the radio are two kinds of the greatest 20th century inventions. What kind of technologies do you like? In my opinion, watching television is better than listening to the radio. There are three reasons why I prefer watching television.
The first reason is that TV media can spread information widely. People can receive words and pictures quickly; moreover, it attracts more attention and replaces both newspaper and radio.
The second reason is that it helps parents taking care of their children. They can do activities with their children; in addition, it helps parents to teach children visually and verbally. The children may get a good example of better language .For example; on television they can see a picture of a cat, and a host can say that is a cat. Children can learn the word “cat” form this picture. The third reason is that you can get a lot of different information from television such as news, history, and geography
On the other hand, listening to the radio has some advantage too. Radio can help you improve your English. If you always listen to the radio, you can pick many new words, and your listening skill will get better; furthermore, radio is a cheap device. You can pay little money and get a new radio of a good quality.
Both television and the radio have some advantages. I would advise people who are good at art listening to the radio more. But for those ones who would like to learn fast use TV.

Several reasons for choosing to study an academic english langauge ( Sahar )

The most important reason that made me to decide an academic English language program to study is to complete my Master degree in one of the best Universities in Canada, so I study now in ELI at UBC this academic program which is very tough. Even though I took a University Foundation program which is helped a lot of student to improve their English language from the academic aspect, I planned to study the similar program in ELI to improve my academic English languag. Therefore, I can apply for different universities easily based on my good experience, so another reason for studying this program in ELI now that I want to improve my academic English aspect. Actually, I didn’t find any difficulties to take my dissection to study in ELI while it was very difficult decision when I was in the previous school because it was very new program in the school. On other hand, I chose an academic program to study in ELI that my husband chose this program to study in, so this is another reason for choosing an academic program to study. Eventually, I hope to get a lot of benefits from studying academic English here to upgrade my level.
