Short Story ( Abdulwahab )

A one day there is famous couple of man and woman. They love each other very much. They were studying together in high school but after high school everyone has special life and far from each other. Then , after many years the man wanted to come back to marry from the woman who he loves. He called her and told her: I will come back tomorrow. Next , when he came back they met in the train station and hugged each other because everyone missed each other. After that , they went out and talked about what they did for many years a go. Then , the man asked her to marry him but she told him: I'm sorry , I'm married from two years a go and has a son. Also , she told him we are best friends but he was very sad. Then , he has gone far a way to go on in his life and to find another woman to love her and marry her.

Hi everyone!

I have just finished reading your first journal, and I enjoyed reading all of your posts. You have done a good job of this first journal- well done! I also thought you did a good job of commenting on each other's posts. I do have one suggestion - I recommend not commenting on specific grammar points. Remember that the goal is to get lots of practice with writing fluency. There is lots of time in class to focus on other aspects of writing. It is great when you ask questions of one another, as that means you have to look at your readers' questions and try to answer them, which will help you to think about and develop each piece of writing. My first bloge about my dream ( Sahar )

I hobe to get my Ph.D in a flash! Because I want to go back to my country as an important and effective person in my society, especially in my family, I plan to become a professor in Microbiology. My family is waiting for the good news which will tell them that their daughter got a Ph.D with honors. They will be incredibly happy, so my job is to keep their smiles on their faces forever.

School Uniform (Wenan Wu)

When I was in high school, I thought a lot of rules were rules. Like we couldn't change our hair color, make tattoo, smoke and so on. The most dislike is we must be required in school uniform. I thought people could choose clothes by themselves, even though we were student. I thought uniforms were too general, they can't let me special, because I hoped people could pay more attention to me. Sometimes, I broke this rule. I would wear clothes that were bought by myself to go to school. When I was in different clothes and went across the playground, classmates all looked at me. I felt so good. After that, the teacher asked me to his office, than something happen……….

From where I see now, students must be required to wear school uniform. Student is a special rule in the society. People can surprise them if they are in school uniform when they leave school. You can't go to bar, Internet bar and buy cigarette if you are in the school uniform. Like me in high school, students like dressing themselves. Every morning, they will spend many times to choose their clothes; it will influence their studies.

Nowadays, students in high school they all don't a lot of rule to limit them. But I hope they know, school make these rules is for protect them.

The most funniest thing that happed to me (Sahar)

Once a day, my husband made the most delicious burger that I have seen in all my life. It contained everything that you can find in your fridge, such as, lettuce, tomato, onion and all kind of vegetables, so I thought that it might be a new kind of burgers and sandwich’s world. Unfortunately, the main content was burning beef which was look like grilled, so this content was hidden by mayonnaise and ketchup which was very good idea. Also, he prepared nice decoration for the table; it has glasses on the table filled with fresh juice and nice dishes that it has mash potato, so everything was gorgeous and attractive. Then, I faced this meal with all my brave and I can’t forget that I was starving. Even though the all decoration and the nice looking for dishes, the beef was burned which was hidden. However, I was starving, so I kept eating, and then my husband asked me about the taste how it was. “Look, I am starving but to be honest I don’t like this burger”, I said. Then, he was laughing and I was surprised about his feeling about his cooking. “Me neither, I don’t like the taste of burger but actually I am very hungry too”, my husband said. Finally, I want everybody try my husband cooking, he is a good chief, and if anyone want to be like him just sine up in his website which is explained his funny meals.

We want more freedom. (Will)

Have to be honest to say, I very enjoying the time that I was a high school student .I made a lot of new friends and the school life was interesting. But I always angry about two things, because when we finished the classes we also need to study in school in evening and have to live in school in week days. For example, we need to do homework and review lessons in school until 10:30p.m then go back to dormitory. We don’t have much free time to do anything what we want to do. We just can have a rest in weekend, but we also have so many homework need to do.
I always think it’s very unfair. Sometimes I really want to break the rule but my parents and friends always give me comfort. Why we have a home but we can’t go back? Today, I finally understand why the school needs us to do this. The school just want us have a good study environment and want to improve us. On the one hand, they want students have no reason to explain why they didn’t finish their homework, because students need to finish the homework in classroom. On the other hand, when the students have some questions they can ask teachers at once. One day I ask my friend, what they thought about this. Their opinion are same as me, they also think it’s a good way to study. At last, I accepted this life style.
I very appreciated what my school done for us, but I also want to give some advices to them. The school shouldn’t give students too much pressure; they should like western schools just give students more freedom, let students to find out what they should to do.

I have met many kinds students in the ELI (Jordan)

I have studied in the ELI about 4weeks. I have met lots of students since I began to study here. There are lots of people from different countries, such as Korea, Saudi Arabia, Japan, China and local. They are different to me, because they have different accent when they speak English. And their face also different to me, however, Asian have similar face. One of the difference is there are many different ages people in same class. In China, I studied with coeval. Now, I study with different ages in same class that make me feel a little bit uncomfortable. I also changed my studies’ style; I am trying to learn independent learning and independent study skills.

Everyone is on the Way to Dream（Vanessa）

I meet lots of friends who are from different countries and areas at the ELI, and they have different culture and religions. I would like to describe four types of students according to their different goals for the future in this paragraph. The first category are students who are interested in studying English as a language. If they speak English with great fluency, they can communicate with others when they travel to foreign countries and make new friends. English is an international language and it plays a significant role in the world. I have a Japanese classmate who is a retired lady. She begins to learn English at the age of 50, because she has a passion for English. Next, students from other countries that want to find a job in Vancouver and then immigrate here. In their opinions, the environment here is comfortable, social welfare is good and residents are kind-hearted and hospitable. You can find some couples both study at the ELI in order to seek better quality of life in Vancouver. Another category of students are the ones who intend to find a better job and get a higher salary in their own country. It is a good opportunity for them to join an international company which will provide with a good position and excellent career advancement. Finally, perhaps the largest group are students who are planning to apply for university or graduate school in North America. In this group, Chinese students account for the largest percentage. it is difficult for Chinese to go aboard to study. Specifically, not only is the process complex but also high English marks are required to get a visa. As a member of the last group, I treasure the chance of studying abroad. The active and flexible methods the teachers use in class are helpful and useful for me to improve my English efficiently and quickly. It will fulfill my goals I am working on, and the dream I am aiming for. I am putting all my effort into my English study in order to make my dream come true. So I wish things are going to work out just the way I want it to.

The Big Challenge for me (Samar)

Sometimes you will make a difficult decision to improve your life; however that decision you made will change your life. Last year, I decided to continue my education, so I applied for king Abdullah program to take scholarship. After that, I prepared myself to go Canada, but it was a hard decision to leave my family for a long time and I have the responsibility of myself. I believe this my chance to reach my goal. Then I have to learn English. There are several reasons to learn English. First of all, I want to take master degree in medical physics in Canada. Therefore, I never find reference about my major by my first language. It is only by English. The important reason is community with international people. I wish to meet different people from many countries, so English gave me a way to talk with them. Moreover, I plan to travel around the world, and I can use my English as communication with people. Finally, I hope to find a great job in my country. It also is my dream to talk English as a second language, but it is a big challenge for me. I think English is easy way to achieve my goal.

Learning From Other (Phoebe Chang)

This is my third session study in ELI, and I already stay in Vancouver for seven months. I still remember when I just came here, I saw everything strange and I was really anxious to talk with other people. I was quiet and lonely, that’s why my speaking improved so slowly.
One day, everything seemed as usual. After my last class, I brought my backpack and prepare to go home. Accidentally, My Japanese classmate who had never talk with me at break time. She was smile and she asked me about the CA’s activity and she also invited me to join together. So after that I went to the aquarium with many people from different country.
That Japanese girl is my first friend from other country. Since I went to the aquarium with her, I became happier. She smiling all the time that make me feel worm. I know that when people get alone, they need something that keep them worm. I was learning lots of things from ELI students. Different cultures, different languages, different majors, that all of thing made me learn something without books, and I think that knowledge can get me into the University more easily.

The reason for I choosing ELI(Kenny)

Learning English in an English speaking country has many advantages. It is, therefore, a good idea to learn English in Canada or America. However, I believe it is not the only way to learn the language.To begin with, I am in non-English-speaking countries learn English in high schools or universities. Although we spoken English are not usually of a very high standard, we knowledge of grammar are often quite advanced. This is certainly useful when later we come to an English-speaking country to perfect the language.However, it is obviously advantageous to learn English in English speaking countries every day, I will have ample chance to practise listening and speaking. In addition, I also can experience the foreign culture, which greatly helps understand the language. This is especially true if we choose to live with an Canada or American family. Still, since we are taught by native speakers, our reading and writing skills will improve as well.

Cheating On phenomenon(Elvis Li)

It is a not honor word, cheating , which attract so many people to do this. The reason why a great deal of people make a decision to risk is that cheating can help people get good grade, but it cannot need them to pay their effort.

With the development of the society, people pay increasingly attention to education. As a result, thousands of students take part in various examinations. However, some students have been found cheating on their exams. Some of them copy from each others, some took out their textbooks or reference books to copy, some copied from small pieces of paper on which they had prepared for the exam, still some used the modern communication tools such as BP, mobile phone as a way to cheat on exams.Then, what’s the effect of cheating on exam? There are three factors for this. First, it results in an unfair competition and will destroy the creativity of those bright students. Second, it will ruin the students’ self-confidence in the long run. Third, under that kind of circumstances, the students graduated from the schools will not be the one who can meet the need of the society.

However, how to stop cheating on exam? In my opinion, there are two ways we can adopt. First, a severe punishment should be put into effect to prevent students from cheating. Second, great effort should be made to make students understand what kind of person the society needs and try to improve their self-confidence.

My Experience in high school (Thanisa)

We all as students got some kind of experience in our high school. Some students disagreed with many rules. Here is one of my examples. Now, I would like to share some information about my school. My high school’s name is Saint Joseph Convent School. It is a private and Catholic school. There are three rules, which I don’t like. The First rule is that getting to school on time. My school starts at 8 a.m., but I should be there at 7.40 a.m., because you need to stand up in front of the flag and sing a Thai song everyday. One day, I was late for school because it was raining, and it was a traffic jam. My teacher made me to run around the sport stadium and recorded my name on attendance sheet.
The second rule you must wear school uniform. My school has uniforms consisting of white shirts with a blue tie, dark blue skirt and black shoes. I don’t like this uniform because I don’t like a uniform policy. You have to use a long dress and button up a collar button. I think this is a horrible policy.
The last rule is the rule I dislike the most in my school. You must have a straight and natural hair with no artificial methods, not curly hair or bob hair. If you have a straight hairstyle, you must make a ponytails hairstyle. In Grade 12, I had cut my hair in bob style. My teacher got angry. She recorded my name on her notes and ordered me to stay at home for 3 days
I think everybody disagrees with one rule or the other, but my experience was quite a bad one. It is very important to remember good things and to forget the bad ones, only turn them into something positive

Big screen and small screen(Bonnie)

Whould you like to enjoy a movie at home or in a theater? Both of them have the benefits and the drawbacks. It is difficult for people to choose between the big screen and the small screen.
Wathching a movie in a cinema can enjoy the movie better. All the theaters are established the good sound equipments that make people been in the reality of the movies. Especially for the films which are about the famous wars, immagination, and the musics. People will feel they were in the very surroundings. However, the small screen of TV in your house may not reflect the effects of the movie. In addition, you cannot enjoy the fatastic music freely because you are not allowed to turn up the volume in a quiet living community.
If you want to date with your friends, inviting them to go and see a movie in the cinema is a nice choice. The cinema is a romantic and high quality place, and it is also a situation of enjoying life. Further more, verious of new movies which are directed and acted by the well-known directors and the popular stars will only be showed in a cinema first.
But watching DVD at home also has advantages. On one hand, you can save money. The money that you spend on watching movies in the cinema can buy over ten pieces of DVD. It is a luxurious method. On the other hand, you can spend more time to stay with your family when you see the film at home. The elders will prefer to buy DVD than to go to the theaters because they understand the difficulties of earning money. Thus share a movie with your parents in the weekends is not barely a way to relax, but also a opportunity to chat with them.
When it comes to watch a movie, there will be a contradiction for people because either seeing a movie in a theater or seeing the DVD at home has the advantages and the disadvantages.

I hope that you are enjoying/ have enjoyed the long weekend. I am writing this on Sunday afternoon, and it has been a cloudy morning, but I am hoping to see some blue sky and sunshine this afternoon.

My favorite person ( Abdulwahab )

His name is Abdulwahab Halabi. He was born in 1989 in AL-Khobar, Saudi Arabia. He is the youngest in his family. He likes to do many things when he has free time such as go to the gym, or sometimes go swimming, or stay at home play video games. Abdulwahab used to play soccer for the team of his city when he was 13 years old, but he stopped play soccer when he was studying in high school because the level of studying in high school was hard. Then, he decided to study and just play soccer for fun. Moreover, He likes riding horses when he has a lot of free time. Also, he likes to travel to different countries because traveling teaches him abound the other customs and tradition and gives him the experience of living abroad. After he finished high school, he worked as a cashier in a coffee shop for a few months. After that, he chose to go to Canada because there are many universities which are the best universities around the world. Now, he is in Canada studying English and after that he will apply to university. Abdulwahab wants to get a higher education and I wish him all the best in his life.

My Classmate, ABO (Thanisa)

I have a lot of friends who come from many countries. One of them comes from Libya. Here is a little story about him. His name is Abo, and he graduated with a master’s degree from his country ,with a major in statistics. He is interested in chess and poetry. In his freetime, he writes many stories. He has already started a story about love. In this story, he wrote the word “love” more than 1,000 words in many situations. Football is his favorite sport. He played football after finishing class in his university. His favorite place in Vancouver is the Rocky Mountains. Last February, he went to the Rocky Mountains with his friends. He enjoys skiing on these mountains. Now he is studying English at the English Language Institute. He studies English because he wants to improve his English language skills for admission to university in Canada. He lives on the UBC Campus. After finishing this ELI course, he will apply to do a PhD degree in Canada and get married. When he finishes his PhD degree in Vancouver, he wants to be a teacher in university.

This is My Partner Bonnie (Will)

My partner is Bao Xiaohuan and her English name is Bonnie. She was a university student in China and her major was journalism. She had a part-time job in China so she has some job experience that will help her to find a job in Vancouver easily. She is already planning her future. After she finished the ELI courses, she wants to study in UBC to get Master’s degree in journalism and she wants to work here and make a lot of money because she wants to take care of her parents better because she was awared her parents have spent a lot of money for her studying. She also thinks studying is to make lives more comfortable in the future and money is a very important thing for living well. I agree her point very much because our parents want us to get the best education and want us to have life skills to make us have a good future, so we have responsibility to look after our parents.

Myself(Wenan)

My name is Wenan Wu. I come from China. I graduated high school two year years ago. I like swimming and running. Also I like making jokes to make every one happy. Maybe sometimes it is not funny.I like summer. I often enjoy sunshine durning the summer.
Now I come to Vancouver to study. I have been here 5 months. I am studying in the ELI now. I hope I can go to UBC. It is too hard for me now, but I will work hard.

My Partner (Phoebe Chang)

There are many reasons to let a person go abroad. My partner Vanessa has the same reason as me, which is to find our dream job, and we both like school life. However, we also have lots of differences. It’s a good thing to make friends with her. She is a Chinese girl and she is the only child in her family. She has lots of hobbies. She also likes pets. She has a cat called Mimi. She has already finished her University. I hope her dream will come true. That is my partner, who is my friend Vanessa.

Phoebe, You Can Do It (Vanessa)

My partner Phoebe, who comes from China, is a quiet, sensitive and talented girl. She is good at drawing. She has already studied painting for many years. Therefore, she always prefers staying at home and drawing pictures instead of hanging out with friends in her leisure time. When she is drawing, she is enjoying herself. Drawing is beneficial for her to cultivate her temperament, as it relaxes her, releases her stress and makes her calm. She also spends her spare time watching movies and improving computer skills. At the same time, she is interested in Psychology. She is planning to get a bachelor’s degree of science in Canada. Her sensitivity and thoroughness in character contribute to her doing well in her studies. Now, she lives in Vancouver alone and she is far away from her home and family. When she feels lonely, drawing is often her company. She has to be independent and take good care of herself. It is really an invaluable experience for her to go abroad for education. With her hard work, Phoebe will be successful in getting a bachelor's degree.

A New Friend (Samar)

Jordan is in my ESL writing class this semester, and he has an interesting life. He comes from Chang Zhi, China. He lives with his parents and his brother in his hometown, but now he lives in a homestay near SFU. He always spends his free time talking with his friends, and searching for news online, so he likes to know what happening in the world. He also has a lot of friends who study at UBC. Therefore, he chose Canada to learn English and complete his major. He wants to get a great job in his country after he finishes his education. He also visited Australia when he studied in high school. I think he compared Canada and Australia. However, he wants to try a new country and a new way to learn English. This is the first time I have met someone his age who is interested in the news and journalism.

A New Friend(Yanhan)

My name is Li Yanhan. My English name is Elvis. Today I am glad to hae a conversation with my new friend who is from Korea. His Korean name is a little difficult to get the correct pronunciation in English, so I called him Peter. He lives in Seoul, the capital of Korea,Where he grew up. There are four members in his family. He loves his sister and respects his parents very much, because he thinks the family is the most important part of his life. I agree with his opinion. I think Peter is a grea language commander. He can speak chinese very well. He is almost anative speaker. The reason why he is good at Chinese is that his major is business in China.He came to Canada to study English. He wants to practice speaking and listening to improve his english skills. He need to be an advanced speaker to achieve his purpose. He is a very kind person. He thinks people should get peace for each other all over the world, and he considers the freedom which si a kind of basic rate is an important thing for him.
I am very happy to meet him and honored to make friends with him.

My partner's name is Samar. She comes from a nice country, Saudi Arabia. She is interested in walking and watching new movies. There are just two members in her family. Her husband and herself. She always cooks for her husband, and she likes healthy food and Chinese food. Now, Sarmar studies at the ELI, because she wants to get a higher score in the TOEFL test to complete her major in Canada. She wants to get a Master's degree from UBC. When she finishes studying in Canada, she will go back to her hometown to get a great job. This is her first time to leave her family for a long time, so she feels lonely in Vancouver, but before she came to Canada, she had been to Australia and Egypt. Anyway, I hope she can enjoy studying at the ELI. I believe she can make lots of friends at the ELI, and forget her loneliness.

I Will (Bonnie)

My partner Will is a boy who believes in the hope and the future. Will has an experience studying in Sydney, which was his unforgettable life of high school. The weather in Sydney is so nice that he just needed to wear the T-shirt all year and he loved this city. He likes the comfortable life and He thought his name means the future. In addition, the popular star Will Smith is also his favorite well-known star. He came to Vancouver because he plans to graduate from the famous university, UBC. There he can get a fabulous education in Canada and that is why he chose this city. At the same time, he believes in that graduating from UBC can not merely bring him knowledge, but also help him for doing business in the future years. Therefore, Will will do his best and will always say “I will”.

My genius friend, Peter (Kenny)

Peter, who comes from Korea, has cheerful view of his life. Do you know what a genius is? I think Peter is. He is not only good at playing guitar but also good at I-go , which is a kind of game. I have to say that he is among the most intelligent guys I have even seen. There are lots of people that are only good at one thing. Peter is 25 years old. His sister is studying at UBC campus too. His mother was coming with them together. Only his father is working in Korea alone. Another important piece of information which is missing is his girlfriend was an ELI student last semester. During studying in Canada he would like to go to other cities for traveling. I must admit he is a great guy! He is a very friendly guy. He likes animals, especially dogs. He is also a lovely guy. When he see some people are in trouble he always try his best to help them. He said if one day there no troubles in the world that would be wonderful thing.
